Mass / Guides

Kilograms, pounds, stones and tons: which mass unit is meant?

Kilograms and pounds fit everyday masses; stones appear in some British contexts, while tonnes and US tons describe much larger loads.

Begin with the named unit

The kilogram is the SI base unit of mass. A pound avoirdupois is exactly 0.45359237 kg, so a kilogram is approximately 2.20462 lb. A stone is exactly 14 avoirdupois pounds, or about 6.35029 kg. These names often appear in personal, shipping and agricultural records. Mass is distinct from force: a scale may be described casually as measuring weight, but a kg-to-lb mass conversion does not calculate the gravitational force at another location. Write the full unit label when a document crosses measurement systems.

Check an everyday example

Suppose a record lists 11 stone. Multiply by 14 to get 154 lb. Using the pound definition gives approximately 69.85 kg. A person using kg and another using st can thus describe the same mass with very different numbers. To reverse a stone-to-kilogram result, convert kilograms to pounds and divide by 14. Keep the original 11 st alongside the rounded metric value. If a source gives stones and additional pounds, combine the total pounds before conversion; 11 st 2 lb is 156 lb, not 11.2 stone.

A metric tonne compared with a US short ton
  1. 1 metric tonne
  2. 1,000 kilograms
  3. about 1.10231 US short tons

The two meanings of ton

A metric tonne is exactly 1,000 kg. A US short ton is exactly 2,000 avoirdupois pounds, or 907.18474 kg. Therefore one metric tonne is about 1.10231 US short tons. The word ton alone is ambiguous: there is also a British long ton of 2,240 lb, which this particular US-ton tool does not represent. Before comparing freight or material quantities, read the contractual unit and write tonne or US short ton explicitly. Choosing the wrong ton can make a sizable difference at large loads.

Work through a large load

A shipment of 1 metric tonne has a mass of 1,000 kg, approximately 2,204.62 lb and approximately 1.10231 US short tons. The embedded converter performs the tonne-to-US-ton step. If a US document instead lists 1 short ton, the mass is 907.18474 kg, not 1,000 kg. Compare both shipments in the same unit before calculating cost per unit mass. Round monetary calculations only after converting the underlying quantity, and verify whether a stated capacity refers to payload, vehicle mass or a regulatory limit.

Keep context and precision

Personal scales may display kilograms to tenths while freight certificates may record whole tonnes or a measured kilogram value. A conversion factor does not justify extra measurement precision. Preserve enough digits in the calculation to avoid an avoidable discrepancy, then display a rounded figure consistent with the source. Also check whether lb means avoirdupois pounds in the document; specialized historical uses are outside this ordinary converter. Mass, force and volume are different quantities, and changing a mass unit cannot by itself estimate cargo volume or floor loading.

Make comparison reproducible

Record value, unit and system before using the converter: 1 t metric = 1,000 kg ≈1.10231 US short tons. In a spreadsheet, give separate columns for source mass and converted mass so an auditor can follow the factor. For smaller values, use the linked kilogram-pound and stone-kilogram tools rather than scaling a tonne example by memory. If two reports disagree, check short versus long ton, whether pounds were added to stones correctly, and whether either result was rounded before conversion. A reverse calculation should return close to the original value.
