Length

Convert everyday distances and dimensions between metric and imperial units.

Choose a conversion below. Every tool includes an instant result, an example and a short explanation.

Choosing the right conversion

Use length conversions for distances, heights, product dimensions and plans. The international inch is exactly 2.54 cm; a foot is 12 inches and an international mile is 5,280 feet. Those definitions make the calculator reversible without relying on rounded display values.

Check what was measured before converting: a screen size usually means its diagonal, while a parcel dimension may use its longest edge. For survey records, an older US survey foot can differ slightly from the international foot used here. Keep more digits through intermediate calculations and round the final result to suit the original measurement.

Common questions

Why do inches and feet give different looking numbers?

An inch and a foot describe the same kind of distance at different scales: twelve inches make one foot. Choose the unit printed on your source measurement, then select the unit needed by the destination. The numeric result changes, but the physical length does not.

When should I round a converted length?

Keep the full calculated value while combining dimensions or comparing a limit. Round only when you present the final answer, using the precision of the original measurement. A parcel measured to the nearest centimetre does not become accurately known to many decimal places merely because it was converted to inches.
