Feet and inches to cm: convert a mixed height correctly

A height such as 5 ft 11 in has two parts. Convert both parts to the same length unit, add them, and only then round the result for the form you are filling in.

Read the notation before entering a number

A height written 5 ft 11 in means five whole feet plus eleven inches. A single quote often marks feet and a double quote inches, so 5′ 11″ is another way to write the same measurement. It is not the decimal number 5.11 feet. The digits after a decimal point describe tenths and hundredths of a foot, whereas the separate inch field counts twelfths of a foot. If an application provides two boxes labelled ft and in, place 5 in the first and 11 in the second. If it asks for centimeters, combine the measurements first. Copying 5.11 into a feet-only converter would produce the wrong height.

Convert both parts using defined length factors

The international inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters and an international foot is exactly 12 inches, or 30.48 centimeters. For a mixed height, compute centimeters = feet × 30.48 + inches × 2.54. Both products describe lengths in centimeters, so they can be added. Do not multiply the two outputs or feed the numerical result of the feet converter into the inches converter: the second tool would then interpret centimeters as inches. The embedded feet-to-centimeters tool handles the first term. Open the linked inches-to-centimeters tool for the second term, then add the displayed centimeter results. Keep unrounded results until that final addition.

Add two lengths after converting each to centimeters.
  1. 5 ft × 30.48 = 152.4 cm
  2. 11 in × 2.54 = 27.94 cm
  3. 152.4 + 27.94 = 180.34 cm

Work through 5 ft 11 in

Five feet give 5 × 30.48 = 152.4 cm. Eleven inches give 11 × 2.54 = 27.94 cm. Add 152.4 and 27.94 to obtain 180.34 cm. An independent route is to turn the whole height into inches: 5 × 12 + 11 = 71 in; 71 × 2.54 also gives 180.34 cm. This reverse route is useful when checking a spreadsheet formula or a measurement copied from an online profile. Try 5 in the embedded feet tool and 11 in the inches tool. If one output is about 12 times larger than expected, check whether the input was interpreted as feet or inches.

Use the precision the destination asks for

The unit factors are exact, but a person's measured height usually is not exact to a hundredth of a centimeter. If the original reading was rounded to a whole inch, reporting 180.34 cm may suggest more measurement precision than the source supports. A form asking for whole centimeters might reasonably receive 180 cm; a form asking for one decimal place might receive 180.3 cm, subject to its own instructions. Do not round each component to whole centimeters before adding: 152 cm plus 28 cm happens to give 180 cm in this example, but early rounding can shift other results. Keep 5 ft 11 in in your notes so you can reproduce or revise the conversion later.

Handle fractional inches and unusual entries

Some measurements include a fractional inch, such as 5 ft 11½ in. Convert the fraction to a decimal inch before using the inch converter: 11½ is 11.5, giving 152.4 + 29.21 = 181.61 cm. If an input says 4 ft 15 in, normalize the extra twelve inches to obtain 5 ft 3 in, or simply calculate both terms as written; the result is identical. Avoid assuming a bare value such as 5.11 means feet and inches without a label. Likewise, a value in centimeters cannot be split into foot and inch boxes by moving a decimal point. Units and notation need to be identified before arithmetic starts.

Check a result in the other direction

To check a combined conversion, divide the centimeter result by 2.54 to get total inches. For 180.34 cm, this returns 71 in. Divide 71 by 12: the whole-number part is 5 ft and the remainder is 11 in. The linked centimeters-to-inches converter can confirm the first reverse step. If the destination only stores centimeters, keep the original imperial value separately; repeatedly converting a rounded display can create a small drift. This guide concerns a length, not body mass or clothing size. A clothing label may use a brand-specific size chart, and a medical record may specify its own measurement method. Match that context before deciding how many digits to submit.
