Inches to meters — How it works

Understand the units

This page changes a stated value from inches (in) into meters (m). Enter the number as it appears in your measurement, keeping its original unit in mind. The calculation runs in your browser and gives a numerical result that you can copy or check against the explanation below.

An international inch is defined as exactly 0.0254 metre. Multiply an inch value by 0.0254 to express the same length in metres; 40 in is 1.016 m. This direction often appears when an inch-based drawing must be entered into a metric building plan. Be careful with feet-and-inches notation: 5 ft 8 in means 68 in, not 5.8 in and not 5.8 ft. Add the inch components before converting. The factor is exact, but a quoted dimension may be rounded, nominal or subject to manufacturing tolerance. A converted number alone cannot reveal which of those descriptions applies.

Apply the relationship

The relationship between in and m is fixed for the units used here. Multiply the input by 0.0254 to obtain the output. This factor changes the unit scale only; it cannot repair a measurement error or identify an ambiguous unit in the source document.

For a concrete check, start with 48 in. Applying the conversion factor gives 1.2192 m. You can put the result back into the inverse conversion to see whether it returns the starting number, allowing for any rounding shown on the screen.

Worked example

A table top is specified as 72 in long. Entering 72 gives 1.8288 m, a convenient value for a room layout drawn in metres. If the seller rounds the top to the nearest inch, showing 1.8288 m does not imply submillimetre knowledge of the actual piece. Measure the product directly before cutting a tight recess. The same conversion can translate a 27 in monitor diagonal to 0.6858 m, but it will not give the monitor's horizontal size without its aspect ratio. State whether the inch figure measures a diagonal, edge or clearance when sharing the converted value.

Precision and practical use

For in to m, keep the unrounded value through intermediate calculations and choose final digits according to the original measurement. The definition of the unit may be exact while the measured object, clock reading or instrument is approximate. Use the surrounding notes to decide how to interpret the displayed result.
