Escape JavaScript string — How it works

What changes in this tool

Turn text into a quoted JavaScript string literal. Produces a quoted JavaScript-compatible string literal using JSON escape rules. The result is a complete quoted JavaScript-compatible string literal. New lines, quotation marks and backslashes receive escapes, while ordinary Unicode text remains readable. Copy the outer quotes too; removing them changes the output from a literal into source text.

Know the format

JavaScript source can contain strings, comments, regular expressions, template literals and constructs in which a line break matters. A small editor cannot safely infer every boundary from punctuation alone. The block formatter here handles simple brace-and-semicolon code and rejects template literals or ambiguous regular-expression syntax instead of quietly rewriting them. It is intended for short inspection snippets, not bundling application code. The separate string-escape operation treats all input as data and serializes it as one quoted literal; it does not run the text as code. In either case, copied output should be checked in the destination parser and test environment.

A dependable workflow

Escaping is a representation step for a single value. Start with the unescaped text, including actual line breaks and quotation marks, and let the tool create a quoted literal. Copy the entire result, including its outer quotation marks, into a context that expects a JavaScript string expression. A backslash followed by n in the output represents a line break in the value; it is not two ordinary letters after the string is evaluated. Do not add an extra escape layer unless you are placing this literal inside another string or serialization format. Test the receiving program with a short value containing a quote, backslash and non-ASCII character before using long or private text.

Check the result

Keep the original next to the output and test a small known example before handling a large document. Compare meaningful content, not only file size or the number of lines. Check names, quoted strings, non-ASCII characters, line endings and any repeated fields after the transformation. A syntactically readable result does not validate a schema, prove that code executes, or establish that data is safe to publish. This site processes the entered text in the browser and displays the result as text, but the copy you paste into another application will follow that application’s rules. If the tool rejects an input, do not remove unexplained characters merely to get an output: identify which construct is outside the supported subset and use a dedicated parser when necessary.
